Waikiki Evening

Our trip to Honolulu was January 7-14, 2020.

Hey, we weren’t expecting Paradise, just someplace warmer and hopefully drier than Eugene in the winter. An interesting American city with a unique cultural history and vibe.

The first evening we checked into our condo and strolled out into the Waikiki evening, flowing with the tourists down to the upscale district bordering the beach. We had drinks and a substantial happy hour meal at the Hula Grill.

Enjoying people watching and the view of Diamond Head

Rainbow Morning

Our second day in Honolulu we had a Catamaran ride scheduled.
We thought we had given our snorkeling equipment away, but Bill found it hiding somewhere in the garage.
I wasn’t so sure about the snorkeling, though, to be honest. Every time I think of snorkeling, I think of two things. There was my first time snorkeling, when we were stranded on a lump of coral without fins while our guide and the others swam off without us (the low). But first and most I think of snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef in 2000, the most absolutely amazing few hours that I have ever experienced in my life. The fish were beautiful, but it was the corals that slayed me–so varied and beautiful, and so undeniably alive, breathing, moving. Knowing that world is nearly extinguished now depresses me so much that I can hardly bear the thought of snorkeling again.
