We arrived safely in Brussels—no flight incidents. We were exhausted of course. After the drive to Bruges we checked in to the elegant hotel Cassleberg and slept all afternoon. Our hotel was elegant, comfortable, and conveniently located near Burg Square and Markt Square. We attended our welcome drink and briefing at the hotel.

We went on a brief walk with our guide, Rebecca Orman. She bought us hot liege waffles, and we ate them sitting on a wall beside the canal, facing a row of pretty little step-gable buildings with shops on their lower levels. We ate our waffles plain from paper sleeve.s, like Bellgians do. They are sweet with a bit of a glazed sugar finish.
Dinner was supposed to be on our own, but Rebecca thoughtfully reserved a table at a restaurant named Diligence so we could eat together. It’s daunting to look for a suitable place to eat immediately after arriving exhausted in a different country with an unfamiliar language.
I had a simple and delicious Flemish beef stew (very tender beef and gravy) with my first Belgian frites (perfectly cooked, golden, light) and Affligem dark beer.
