I’ve been working on my notes and photos from our fall trip, a dream cruise from Antwerp, Belgium, to Basil, Switzerland, with extra time in Bruges, Belgium at the beginning and Luzerne, Switzerland at the end. I’ll be posting these over the next week or so.
September 23: Here we go

The worst part of flying almost anywhere from Eugene is getting up so early to catch that first flight. We set our alarms for 2:30 am and were standing in the boarding line at 4:15.
With the help of good earphones, I was able to snooze to some tunes for about an hour and a half on the Eugene to Denver flight. I wondered if my obsession with the presidential race would ease somewhat after getting out of the country. I had been spending way too much time on my phone.
As was everyone else. In the Denver airport, almost everyone was screening. Out of about 20 people, one person had a book, one a newspaper. While I wrote this, the woman put away her newspaper and took up her phone. One man was eating—but he took out his phone between bites. One slim, healthy-looking older woman stood looking out the window.
Moving through this beautiful airport passthrough felt like the portal to a different world.
