Had a wonderful getaway with family to celebrate my 75th birthday.

The weather was cloudy and chilly, but nobody was complaining. Everyone was coming from worse weather at home. We had everything we needed at the Bahia resort on Mission Bay, including a restaurant with firepit tables. Bill’s grandson Charlie enjoyed piloting the boat outside the restaurant. The blooming birds of paradise gave a tropical vibe.
The younger generation enjoyed getting together, including a mutual friend of Bill’s son John and my son Ben, who now lives in San Diego. It was an easy stroll to the ocean and amusement park with a vintage roller coaster. The teen grands enjoyed it, and I was tempted.
On our last day, we visited Bill’s niece, who lives near San Diego’s Balboa Park. It’s an adorable neighborhood, with Craftsman and adobe houses, an amazing day-of-the-dead themed private garden, and the classic Veritas independent bookstore.
We had to leave on the warmest day, of course, after breakfast in a sunny patio. I wish it was easier to get everyone together. Bill had to do a lot of coordinating and scheming to keep it a secret, but listening to the happy buzz of family talk and laughter around my birthday dinner table will be a precious memory for the rest of my life.
