Strange Logfellows

at Alton Baker Park

Double-crested cormorant, common merganser, and glaucous gull sharing a log.

It wouldn’t be unusual for several cormorants to be stretching out their wings to dry on this log. If we saw the merganser swimming by, that wouldn’t be uncommon either. Gulls fly over from the nearby Willamette River sometimes, but they don’t usually hang around.

On this quiet morning, a cormorant left its friends, a merganser scrambled out of the water, and a gull postponed its visit to the Willamette River buffet. Socially distancing as politely as citizens in line during the pandemic, they settled down for a parallel nap on a log that was installed to attract turtles.

We’ve never seen a single turtle.
